A tale of international extremes, this season’s collections seemed to transcend national boundaries. With tribal prints, sports luxe and casual metallic gaining momentum on the runways, this season’s trends aren’t holding back.

Inspired by African, American and Asian culture, Milan and Paris certainly set an international tone during their fashion weeks. From the Asian royalty vibes of The Row to an almost pagan sensuality at Givenchy, bold global diversity was on the brain of the major fashion houses.

The humble dress-shirt got a sexy revamp this season, unbuttoned and x-rated, this is not office wear as we know it. Victoria Beckham’s take on the trend was a lot tamer however, with sharp colours and colour blocks creating a crisp yet edgy take on daywear. Casual no longer seems to come into it.

Kanye West, as difficult as it is to admit, may have been onto something when he requested artist George Condo to paint on an Hermes handbag for his wife. Rather more tastefully, this season designers are channelling their inner Picasso with brushstrokes and prints. In the bold name of experientialism and creativity, Prada lifted images from political street artists, and the Louis Vuitton show was opened with Edie Campbell covered in corporal graffiti.

To adorn your body with metallic is no longer a practice reserved for afterhours. Many designers crafted a casual yet glamorous take on foil, lame and chainmail. From Haider Ackermann’s molten culottes to Lanvin’s space-age jumpsuit, this season is the time to sparkle.

Despite being an annual go-to trend on the runways, this season even the most established fashion houses such as Dior, Gucci and Tom Ford have succumbed to the sports luxe hype. Using fabrics such as silk, mesh and leather, designers have elevated the status of gym staples to that of glam wear that can be worn out and rocked in stilettos.
